Tramvaj je najstariji oblik javnog gradskog prevoza u Beogradu – uveden je, u početku kao tramvaj na konjsku vuču, još 1892. godine. Kako linije broj 1 odavno nema, „dvojci“ pripada počasno prvo mesto u spisku linija GSP-a. Ipak, „dvojka“ nije druga najstarija linija, već je stvorena tek 1928. kada je izgrađena pruga kroz Beogradsku ulicu i spojene dve njene prethodnice - linija broj 2 koja je od dorćolskog tramvajskog depoa išla kroz Dušanovu pored Kalemegdana pa preko pristaništa do Slavije i linija broj 8 koja je od dorćolskog depoa vozila kroz Vidinsku (danas Džordža Vašingtona) i Ratarsku (Kraljice Marije) do kafane Žagubice po kojoj se zvao ceo kraj (na tom mestu se danas nalazi popularni klub Tramvaj). Linija br. 2 je specifična po tome što je kružna, tj. nema početnu niti krajnju stanicu i ulaskom u tramvaj u oba smera dovešće vas, pre ili kasnije, na isto odredište. „Dvojka“ takođe opisuje zamišljeni „krug“ oko najužeg centra grada koji je znatno kasnije nakon njenog uvođenja postao poznat i kao „Krug dvojke“. Ovu vožnju kroz sam centar grada i mimo nekih od njegovih najpoznatijih delova poput Železničke stanice, Kalemegdana, Bajlonijeve pijace ili kroz Bulevar kralja Aleksandra koriste mnogi koji žele da razgledaju grad po ceni jedne karte za prevoz. Zanimljivo je da na ovoj liniji voze najstariji beogradski tramvaji, češki Tatra KT4YU, nabavljeni još krajem 1970-ih, koji pri vožnji ispuštaju zvuke koje generacije odrasle u poslednjih trideset godina povezuju sa zvukom tramvajske vožnje.

The tram is the oldest form of public transport in Belgrade. The first trams introdced in 1892 were horsedrawn. As there has been no No. 1 line for a long time, the No. 2 line gets honorary first place on the list of Belgrade's public transport lines. However, the No.2 isn't the second oldest line: It was created as late as 1928 when tram rails were laid along Beogradska Street to join up its predecessors; the original No. 2 line that ran from the Dorćol tram depot through Tsar Dušan Street, by Kalemegdan and the Port of Belgrade to Slavija; and the No. 8 line that ran from the Dorćol depot through Vidinska Street (now called George Washington Street) and Ratarska (now Kraljice Marije) to the Žagubice kafana from which the whole neighbourhood took its name (today the popular Tramvaj club has replaced the kafana). The No. 2 line is unique in Belgrade because it is circular, in other words it doesn't have a terminus and jumping on a No. 2 tram in either direction will eventually take you to your destination. The No.2 (dvojka) is also slang for an imagined ring that defines the inner centre of the city which, well after the line was introduced, came to be known as the “No. 2 circle” (“Krug dvojke”). A ride through the centre of Belgrade and past some of the city’s most recognisable sights, such as the railway station, Kalemegdan, Bajlonijeva Market and along King Aleksandar Boulevard, is used by many who want a tour of the city for the price of just one ticket. The line is served by the oldest trams in Belgrade, Czech built Tatra KT4YUs acquired towards the end of the 70s, which when moving make produce a din that whole generations have come to associate with the sound of a tram ride.
